Capcom on Fei Long tweaks in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
“You must learn to block or my speed will overcome you.” Famous words from Fei Long in the Street Fighter 2 series. David Sirlin tells the story of this character and what Capcom did to tweak him. More on the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix Bruce Lee clone after the jump.
For a guy who resembles a martial arts legend, Fei Long was reportedly considered as one of the worst Street Fighter 2 Turbo characters of all time. That is, until Capcom decided to tweak the character for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.
According to David Sirlin, Fei Long went through three different versions for the game. Version 1 involved an easier command input for the Flying Kick and startup invincibility for the short kick version of the move. Capcom then proceeded to buff Fei Long version 2 up considerably, so much so that he became ridiculously overpowered.
Finally, Sirlin said that Capcom nerfed Fei Long somewhat in order to restore gameplay balance to Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. This has resulted in better range for the Rekka punches and an easier-to-perform Flying Kick that may no longer be abused. While the short Flying Kick retains its startup invincibility, it’s now more open to counterattacks.
In a nutshell, Capcom made Fei Long a more fun character to play with easier controls and better overall strength. It kind of makes you wonder who Capcom will tinker around with next in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.
