Capybara Games bringing games to DS, Wii, PSP and XBLA - Image 1Capybara games is an independent game studio that started out back in 2003. Back then it only produced mobile titles, with only a PC, “a cell phone or two” and free development software as a jumping point.

Oh and in case you’re curious, a capybara is “essentially a giant South American guinea pig.” We don’t know what it has to do with games, but it’s a catchy name.

The studio recently won Best Game in the 2008 IGF Mobile awards for their game, Critter Crunch. They now have 11 games to their name, with award-winning titles such as Happy Feet and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, as well as original IP titles like Pillowfight and Super Shove It!

Now they’re branching out and moving on to bigger horizons. Soon they’ll also be releasing games on the DS and PSP, as well as on PSN and XBLA. When the developers were asked what their thoughts were on the Indie game scene, they said:

The mobile industry has been great to us; it allowed us to get our feet in the door and we’ve been fortunate enough to work on a lot of really great titles. That being said, it is difficult to be a studio focused on original titles when the industry is presently driven by either recognizable brands or knock-off titles.
