Champions Online lore: the Stronghold super-prison

The doors to the Stronghold super prison in Champions Online - Image 1Common sense dictates that you cannot keep supervillains in an ordinary prison for long. The reason is that, sooner or later, they’re going to bust out. So where do you keep them, then? Why, in a super-prison, of course! Champions Online has one such place: the Stronghold. Let Cryptic Studios tell you all about it after the jump.

Those of you who have read Marvel comic books may have have heard of a place called The Vault – it was basically a penitentiary for supervillains. Cryptic Studios‘ Champions Online (PC, Xbox 360) has its own version of The Vault, too, only it’s called Stronghold instead.

According to Cryptic Studios, a certain Dr. Charles Wildman first proposed the idea of a super-prison in 1976 as a response to the rampant supervillain crime problem. It was envisioned as an isolated area within New Mexico, and it was to be designed in such a way that would make it impervious to supervillain threats.

The 1990s served as a turning point for the super-prison as a freak accident led to the disabling of Stronghold’s power inhibitor technology and the subsequent escape of more than 40 super-powered inmates. Two warden changes later, Stronghold is apparently back on track. Or is it?

There’s more to the Champions Online lore than what we’ve summarized above, including  mysterious activity in the nearby Area 51 and Snake Gulch ranch.
