Major news cable television network CNN announced today their plans of entering Linden Lab’s MMORPG virtual society Second Life in the hope to understand what’s making news in the new territory. According to the company, it will also be encouraging Second Life residents to submit reports to its virtual I-Report hub.
In real life, CNN is already employing this particular strategy to acquire and deliver news faster. I-Reports, in real life, are delivered to CNN via cell phones, computers, cameras, and other equipment for broadcast and online reports. Likewise, virtual residents can also take snapshots, shoot video, or write report about the events they deem newsworthy.
“The thing we most hope to gain by having a CNN presence in Second Life is to learn about virtual worlds and understand what news is most interesting and valuable to their residents,” commented CNN News Services Executive VP Susan Grant. Alongside the virtual I-Report hub is the opening of CNN.com’s official SL I-Report Blog.
The said hub will have a news desk where CNN producers will hold weekly editorial discussions and a large amphitheater for in-world events, training sessions, and appearances of real CNN anchors and correspondents. The first virtual activity will be held today at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
