Co-creator Kevin Bachus talks about Xbox legacy

Kevin Bachus - co-creator of the original Xbox - Image 1Xbox 360 has gone a long way since the days of being called “PC-in-a-box” or “Port-box”. Many negative criticisms flooded the Xbox development team; even from within Microsoft, said Xbox co-creator Kevin Bachus.

On an essay he wrote, Bachus reminisced about his experiences prior to creating the box. He referred to the few that pushed for a console within Microsoft, “crusaders united by a common vision.”

The essay talked about the dreams of his team, the difficulties within the company, and the bad criticisms they received. “For us, Xbox wasnÂ’t about taking market share from Sony or piling up even more buckets of money for Microsoft,” he said.

Bachus also believes, that one way or another, Xbox caused Sony and Nintendo to raise their game. “Sony and Nintendo suddenly started raising their game, becoming even more focused on developers, helping nurture the industry and ushering in a whole tidal wave of unbelievable games of their own,” is what he claims to be the legacy of Xbox.

He also mentioned that Microsoft had plans to upgrade the Xbox every two years. “Xbox isnÂ’t about any one specific box,” Bachus said. Is this really a thing in the past, or will we see a new version of Xbox in a few years? Sounds feasible to counter Sony’s plan of making the PS3 live for more than 10 years.
