Company Shopping AMD May Pick Up ATI for $5.5B
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the world’s second-biggest maker of microprocessors is reportedly going to the corporate supermarket to pick up ATI Technologies for about $5.5 billion. This according to a source claiming to be involved in the negotiations. Naturally, the source declined to to be named because unnamed sources have greater credibility than identified ones.
ATI currently battling Nvidia Corp for the No. 2 slot as the largest maker of computer-graphics chips behind Intel Corp. By buying ATI, AMD will be able to grab market share from main competitor Intel. If the deal pushes through, this wll be would be the biggest in AMD’s 37-year history. More importantly, it says AMD is dead serious in challenging Intel. Advanced Micro spokesman refused to comment on the rumor saying “It’s still a rumor… to me and no one here can speculate on rumors.”
