Cooking It Up With DS Cooking Navigator
The Nintendo DS is not a multimedia powerhouse, but it’s not just a gaming machine either, as we’ve found out after seeing a TV commercial promoting the handheld as a means to teach people how to cook. We’re talking about the Nintendo DS Cooking Navigator (we didn’t know the name then). With over 200 Japanese recipes, every household will have something to cook up even when mom is away for a long period of time. Even if you’ve been the designated muncher all your life, it’s not too late to learn a few culinary tricks.
What’s cool about the Cooking Navigator is that it’s voice activated. Once you select a recipe, a step by step instruction would appear. Once you say “OK”, the DS will be prompted to move to the next step. This feature comes in handy as both your hands would be busy whipping up that delicious meal.
But then, we wonder if you’d let your DS hang out with you in the kitchen? Come on, you treat it like a baby, so we presume you don’t want it to be exposed to certain kitchen dangers. Well, Hori Corp Japan has thought about that and created the Play Stand, which will hold your DS firmly and away from harm’s way. You can adjust the height and tilt it to a position where you can easily view the screen without putting a strain on your neck. The Play stand will be available for Â¥1,554 ($15).
Unfortunately, the DS Cooking Navigator and its handy stand will only be available in Japan. But if this dynamic duo catches on, we won’t be surprised if English versions come flooding the American shores. And if that time comes, we might find ourselves spending more time in the kitchen rather than some fastfood joint.
