CPU Refinement for the 360
Microsoft announced that they will be updating the CPUs of the Xbox 360 with a 65-nanometer process since the old model use a 90-nm process. They are working with a Singapore-based Chartered Semiconductor and its Silicon-On-Insulator technology to produce the chips. These chips would lessen the heat produced, power consumption and lower manufacturing costs.
“We look forward to working with Chartered on the production of such an important component of our Xbox 360 system,” said Microsoft’s Larry Yang. “We plan to continue with our strategy of dual sourcing from Chartered and IBM’s fabs, which are operationally aligned and compatible, to give us the consistent product quality and flexibility we will need.”
These updated Xbox 360’s will be out around the first quarter of 2007.
