Crytek: online is the future of gaming, CryENGINE 3 ready to go massively multiplayer
Develop Online recently managed to get a little chit-chat out of Carl Jones, Crytek‘s director of global business development, and talked about where the future lies for the guys who brought us the visually stunning Crysis. The answer lies with online gaming and the home consoles, and that’s exactly where the powerhouse CryENGINE 3 will be putting on a show. More after the jump.
“Online gaming is without doubt the future of gaming,” according to Jones. “Where you draw the line at ‘massively’ multiplayer is a matter of opinion, but we can see most – if not all – games involving communities of players in the future. Products such as NCsoft’s Aion prove the power of CryENGINE technology for these types of games.”
With Crysis 2 heading for the PS3, and Xbox 360 apart from the usual (souped-up) PCs, Jones acknowledged that the power behind this console generation has reached a level that allowed them to make the transition. “Developers looking to make truly awesome looking games on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC need look no further than CryENGINE 3,” he said. “It is finally possible to achieve the quality of gaming seen only before in Crysis and Crysis Warhead on consoles.”
For now, Jones hasn’t specified the extent of massive multiplayer he meant, nor did he say if the feature will be available for Crysis 2.
