While Sony has just released official FW 3.71 for the PlayStation Portable, there are still some unresolved issues and interesting points of discussion for firmware 3.60. Even until now, the whole homebrew community are still debating whether custom themes are applicable in Team M33‘s custom firmware for FW 3.60 for the PSP Slim and Lite.

Coder hurtween, for the record, said that it is very much possible with the use of three homebrew applications namely RCO Editor v1.14d, Resurssiklunssi v0.3, and CXMB v2.4. The developer added that all one has to do is to load up the application CXMB through seplugins and convert 3.60 RCO files to avoid crashing. Then hurtween provided the following steps:

  1. Access your Slims’ Flash0 (If you can only see three folders in there you will need to unhide system operating files from the view tab).
  2. Go to f0:/vsh/resource, locate all the RCO’s and save them to your desktop.
  3. Put all the RCO’s that you want to change into the RCO folder in the root of your memory stick and convert them using Resurssiklunssi. You will need a sysmem.prx from older FW to use this tool. Check the readme.
  4. Once they are converted all you need to do is open them with RCO Editor and insert the graphics. You now have Slim PSP compatible RCO’s.
  5. You cannot flash these files because Sony have added some kind of protection which makes putting resource files on Flash0 not work like it used to.
  6. Just save your resource files to ms0:/CXMB/vsh/resource on your memory stick and enable the plugin through the recovery menu.

Definitely a nifty trick and another achievement for the homebrew scene. For those of you who are wondering, hurtween mentioned that prx’s can’t be loaded yet. Please be familiar first will the applications mentioned above by browsing through their Readme.txt files to avoid complications to your handheld units.
