Custom xmb Icon Converter gets an English translation

KGSWS' original XMB picture. :D

One of the great things we can definitely say about working here is that there’s always room for praise. Homebrewers make QJ a great place to be, but there are also other people in our scene who deserve a pat on the back for taking an idea and making it real. One such member of the community is caliFrag.

A few days ago, we talked about kgsws‘ release of an icon hacking application that lets you switch your XMB icons with other pictures. The problem was it wasn’t completely in English. Folks who didn’t know that “zac.dat means zaciatok”, as myschoo explained on the forums some time ago, may have ended up a little lost.

Well, caliFrag decided to translate kgsws’ work for our benefit, and also managed to put in some extra time to make it work on multiple firmwares. It should now work on 1.50, 2.50, and 3.02 firmwares with some people tinkering with the app to see if it’ll run on 3.03 OE-A’.

As always, caution is the name of the game. Check the readme, as well as the forum thread listed below for more information, as well as additional icon packs. Make sure you have a recovery file too, just in case something goes wrong and you run across a bug. Enjoy your new icons!

Changes:

  • Hexed bmp2mig.exe and join.exe: Translated to English.
  • Renamed zac.dat and kon.dat to hdr.dat and ftr.dat respectively.
  • Support for multiple firmwares with one batch file.
  • Added advanced error handling procedures to the batch file.

To Do:

  • Add support to choose icon set from command window. (i.e. a directory list will display the sub-folders in “sets”. You choose a folder and the program will create the icons from that folder.)
