David Cole, along with other game industry analysts, has been studying industry trends for some time now. He and DFC Intelligence have noted two things about 2007: one, online PC games have remained strong; two, Nintendo has succeeded on a global basis.

The latter point is essentially important, as Cole predicts that Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 will lose as the previously Sony-dominated European market will switch loyalties to Nintendo. In fact, Cole pointed out that Phil Harrison‘s departure from Sony was “symbolic of how the torch in Europe seems to be passing to Nintendo.”

Should that indeed be the case, it will be the first time that Nintendo will take the lead in North America, Japan, and Europe at the same time. Cole notes, however, that the European market will not be a market dominated by one and only one system. Instead, he forecasts that European households will be reaping the benefits of owning more than one console at a time.
