David Reeves: Absolutely no price cuts for PS3, not today, not in Spring

The PS3 isn’t doing so well sales-wise, and this isn’t going to help. They may be giving discounts in India this Christmas, but the rest of the world will see that the PS3 will not get any cheaper.

David Reeves, SCEE President, couldn’t have been more straightforward and decisive when he said that there won’t be any price cuts for the PS3. The PS3 isn’t doing so well sales-wise, and this isn’t going to help. They may be giving discounts in India this Christmas, but the rest of the world will see that the PS3 will not get any cheaper.

Here’s what he said in his interview with MCV:

No, we are not going to go down in price on PS3 – neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either. Absolutely not, whatever you might have heard to the contrary. Our strategy is very much value added.

I actually felt the sting on that one, he’s THAT sure that there won’t be any cheaper PS3s, at least not for a long time. He adds, though, that they’re going to add pieces of software and original ideas to the console. “What we want is to make the machine value for money,” he said. Why not start with backwards compatibility then?

The fact of the matter is, they’re losing money. He himself reveals that they lost US$ 2 billion two years ago, and a billion more last year. With the way things are going for Sony right now, things aren’t looking good, and would-be PS3 buyers still won’t get the much-awaited price drop.
