Developer creates Head Tracking Desktop VR using PlayStation Eye

PlayStation Eye used for VR desktop hack similar to Wii VR - Image 1Remember Johnny Chung Lee? He made the Head Tracking VR program on the Wii using the motion-sensing technology of the Wiimote. But let’s not forget that the Wiimote isn’t the only motion-sensing device out there. Programmer Thomas Miller made a similar program of Lee’s Desktop VR on the PlayStation 3 using the PlayStation Eye. Check out the video in the full article.

Little more than a month ago, a grad student created a popular Head Tracking program on the Nintendo Wii. Using the Wiimote, he was able to create a virtual environment on his TV screen, creating an illusion of depth and space with perspective to your field of vision.

Inspired by the idea, programmer Thomas Miller set out to do something similar on the PlayStation 3. Using the PlayStation Dev Kit he created his own Desktop VR program that uses the PlayStation Eye in place of the Wiimote.

Check out the video to see how the program works. At the later part of the video, Miller also remarks that he will be releasing the source code on the PlayStation 3 developer’s network, so watch out for it if you’re an aspiring programmer.
