Strategy gamers don’t have to worry themselves too much over next gen graphics and stunning animation when it comes to games. All that really matters to them is a video game with superior gameplay and a good long while to think over their moves.

Matti Palosuo has decided to port the mind bending strategy game Dice Wars from its original Flash-based programming onto the Nintendo DS. This homebrew version is a small blessing for handheld gamers who want to include portability in the list of perks they want while playing a good solid strategy game.

The original Flash game of Dice Wars was designed by Taro Ito. The object of the game is to basically conquer the board by invading your opponents’ territories. Each player is assigned a number of dice to roll depending on the number of their existing territories. If you happen to get a higher roll against an opponent you want to invade, then you successfully capture that territory.

The game is a mix of strategy and a little bit of luck as most games go. The beauty of Dice Wars is seen in the multiplayer battles not seen in most homebrew games. The latest 0.4.2 beta version includes more adjustments to the ad hoc version of the game and includes a debugging mode to help test the current build. While the Internet enabled multiplayer mode still isn’t implemented, this is something that Palosuo is looking to add in a future update.

Here’s the list of current features included in the latest version:

Version 0.4.2:

  • Ad-hoc / local wireless multiplayer game test version #2
  • Ad-hoc game: AI players implemented.
  • Ad-hoc game: Surrender messages are sent to all players
  • Ad-hoc game: Piling dice works now.
  • Ad-hoc game: End game messages are sent properly to all players.
  • Sounds are enabled again.
