Digital IDs for California residents are then confirmed in Apple Wallet.

California residents now have digital IDs in Apple Wallet
Apple has confirmed Californians will soon be able to carry their driver’s licences and state IDs on their iPhones and Apple Watches. The new feature will be part of California’s pilot program for mobile driver’s licences (mDL), and marks a major step in the state’s efforts to embrace electronic identification. The move was first rumored in August but confirmed by the company on Thursday. Apple Wallet integration with state IDs allows Californians to present their iPhones and Apple Watches for check-ins at Transportation Security Administration Checkpoints (TSA) and certain businesses. The IDs are also able to verify age and identity in certain apps. Physical IDs will be rendered obsolete. California is not alone in adopting this technology. Five other states – Arizona, Maryland, Colorado. Georgia, and Ohio – have already integrated their driver’s licences and state IDs in Apple Wallet. The technology’s expansion across multiple states reflects the growing trend towards digital identification solutions which offer greater convenience and security without compromising. Additional information about the mDL program or the new feature is available on the DMV website. Apple has implemented several layers of protection to protect the personal information of users. Apple Wallet only sends the necessary information to the state issuing authority to approve or reject the request. Once added, ID information is stored locally and encrypted on the device of the user. This ensures that Apple or third parties cannot access it without the user’s consent. Apple Wallet only shares the necessary information when presenting an identity. For added security, users can authorize each transaction by using Face ID or Touch ID. Users do not have to unlock, display, or handover their devices. This protects their privacy. Digital identification could soon become the standard as more states follow suit. However, it will be a while before physical IDs are a thing of history.
