DIY tutorial on how to replace your PS3's hard disk - Image 1Even with the release of Sony‘s 80GB PlayStation 3 console, sometimes 80GB of hard disk space isn’t enough to satisfy all the downloading delights some of us have. There’s a solution to this, however. CNET Asia’s James Yu has come up with a very useful DIY tutorial on how to increase the HDD capacity of your PS3.

Yu mentions that the PS3’s hard disk is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. What’s important is that you get the right size to fit into the 2.5-inch drive tray of your console. As for storage capacity, he recommends going for any of the big HDD sizes ranging from 120GB to as high as 250GB.

If you have any existing data on your PS3’s hard disk, don’t forget to back it up using either an external storage device or copy selected files in the XMB. Don’t forget to format the new hard disk you want to install under FAT32 since that’s the file format system that the PS3 recognizes.

Everything after that is pretty much the usual handyman job with a Philips-head screwdriver and some screws. For a more detailed explanation of the tutorial complete with pictures, you can take a look at it through CNET Asia, accessible through the Via link below.
