Dragon Quest
probably is one of the most successful videogame series in Japan. It used to be known here in the U.S. as Dragon Warrior because of a conflict with another title but that is a different story. Anyway, there are a couple of spin-offs known right now including Dragon Quest Swords for Wii and Dragon Quest Heroes and Monsters for the DS.

Despite the above mentioned titles, people are still clamoring for a “numbered version,” one that is a real part of the series. After all, the last installment was released a couple of years ago for the PS2. To answer the fans call, Square Enix came up today with a press conference to ascertain the matter.

Surprisingly, upcoming Dragon Quest IX will not be released on any of the consoles but instead, on the Nintendo DS. If we are not mistaken, it is very rare for a numbered game to appear on a portable system. There are no concrete words as of now regarding the title but it will feature network play via WiFi. Also, it was subtitled as Protectors of the Sky.

Square Enix mentioned that they are initially targetting for a Japan release sometime in 2007. After that and if the game delivers, they would begin shipping it to other territories.
