DS sales hit 50 million mark
The Nintendo DS handheld game system has officially passed the 50 million mark in terms of worldwide sales, accomplishing the feat in less than three years. At this pace, it may even surpass the popular Game Boy handheld line in due time.
The popular DS has drawn its appeal from innovative touch-screen and voice command controls complemented by easy to learn and quirky games that have expanded the market to women and the older crowd.
About 40 percent of total DS sales came from Japan alone where one in six people own a DS. As fast-selling as the Nintendo Wii game console is, it still pales in comparison to the DS.
Lone rival Sony PSP is doing better since the release of its slimmer version, as evidenced by the 100,000 units sold a day in Japan alone since it debuted. However, it still trails in the overall sales against the DS on a 2:1 basis.
