DSLearn v0.1 alpha

dslearnZarxrax has written a new homebrew program for the DS that was meant to help him study Japanese. Now this is something we could use ourselves as well, considering our “misadventures” with translating Japanese websites using Babelfish and other services. Besides, knowing a second language is just way cool.

However, DSLearn v.0.1 alpha isn’t quite there yet. Right now it is a basic flashcard program that displays text on two sides of a card. In addition, it has a drawing pad where you can scribble an answer before you flip the card over. To use DSLearn v0.1 alpha, you must run PAFS.bat to copy the text data in n /files/DSLearn01.txt into the rom. In the readme file the following instructions were provided by the developer:

  • Do not put more than 1 text file in that folder
  • Every line of the file will be considered a separate card, so do not insert blank lines
  • Front and back of the card are separated by ‘,,’

Remember this is alpha version and Zarxrax has a load of features to add for upcoming releases. Here’s a sneak preview of what to expect:

  • Add Unicode support
  • Allow more text on each card
  • Add FAT support
  • Add ability to use multiple sets of cards
  • Add some sound effects
  • Add card ranking features to show cards you have trouble with more often
