E3 2008: Microsoft currying favor from third party devs, says disappointed Tretton
Now that news of Square Enix‘s Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) going multiplatform has hit the Internet waves since it’s recent E3 announcement, followers of gaming industry news can’t help but wonder: how is Sony taking the news? Read SCEA executive Jack Tretton‘s comment in the full article.
When news of Square Enix‘s Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) going multiplatform stunned the E3 audience (and the people who were tracking the latest E3 developments through the internet), people were left wondering about how Sony reacted to the news. If you’re one of them, then a recent Gamasutra interview with SCEA executive Jack Tretton should satisfy your (morbid) curiosity.
“I guess disappointed is clearly an appropriate term,” he said when asked if he was disappointed about one of PlayStation 3’s much-awaited exclusive, Final Fantasy XIII, going multiplatform with an Xbox 360 release. However, the announcement wasn’t news to Tretton. “Surprised or consider it to be something that’s avoidable? Probably not so much.”
Tretton then went on to say something along the lines of Microsoft “currying favor” to get a slice of the pie from third parties. He continued:
I think software companies look and say, ‘There’s no check big enough for us to do exclusive development.’ I think it’s going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward…Exclusives to me mean Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, and MotorStorm.
To those who missed the correlation between the three games that Tretton mentioned, here’s a hint: they’re all Sony-published titles.
