E3: Iwata says the Wii could break the PS2 record

E3: Iwata says the Wii could break the PS2 record - Image 1The president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, has given word that the Wii can break the 100 million console record of the PS2. Some people would probably dismiss this comment, but the fact of the matter is, Nintendo has been posting some phenomenal numbers ever since the Wii’s launch.

Of course, there were conditions that Iwata mentioned on breaking this record. He told Reuters in the E3 conference that “Sony‘s PS2 sales of 100 million units is an extraordinary number that our home game console business has not achieved, but if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that.”

He was also asked if the company plans on dropping the price of their console, due to the announced price drop of the PS3 and the upcoming PSP lite. Iwata has given word that both products are unlikely to have any effect on Nintendo. He explained this further: “I wouldn’t say there is no overlap between the group of customers Sony is targeting and the group of users that Nintendo is targeting. But that overlap is quite small.”

So there you have, Nintendo has thrown down the gauntlet and has openly said they can break the PS2 sales record. They have been upping production on the Wii to handle the great demand for it though, they might actually be able to pull this one off.
