EA can’t take everything to Wii but will create original titles instead
Electronic Arts, the world’s biggest game publisher, is now recognizing the game phenomenon that is the Nintendo Wii and is making leaps and bounds in stepping up to the demands of consumers for even more third-party titles on the leading next-generation platform.
However, EA was quick to stress to everyone that not all of their game franchises will make the jump. Titles built specifically for the Sony PlayStation consoles and the Microsoft Xbox 360 may not fit the game system well, prompting both developers and the publisher to step on the brakes.
Instead of porting titles directly, what EA plans to do is to develop Wii-specific games to ensure that they fit the innovative control scheme and less-powerful graphics features of the console.
“You’re not going to see every franchise taken to the Wii. Rather than bring the entire portfolio of titles, some of which won’t translate well, we’re taking those dollars and making original software,” says EA COO John Schappert.
Nintendo Mii characters, by the way, are being considered to be made use if by EA’s top execs for use in their titles. Schappert says nothing’s final at this point, but they’re enthusiastic about the idea.
