EA goes karaoke, snags SingShot
Although the financial side of the acquisition was never disclosed, Electronic Arts announced that they got their hands on the online karaoke community SingShot. SingShot is a place where members can create their own renditions of well-known songs and share them across the online community.
The publishing giant, in addition to its casual gaming platform POGO, will now extend its reaches to a unique music-based platform with community content. Once the acquisition is complete, SingShot top execs CEO Ranah Edelin and CTO Niranjan Nagar will be joining EA in the Vice President positions.
Before SingShot, both Edelin and Nagar were members of the Listen.com core team, the same ones behind the famous Rhapsody later acquired by RealNetworks. The SingShot team of five members, who have focused on technology for community building and maintenance, will now join Electronic Arts‘ Sims Division.
Nancy Smith, EA’s Executive VP and Group General Manager, said, “We are thrilled to bring the SingShot team into EA. They are tremendously talented, technically adept and true experts in developing user-generated communities through music. We see a bright future for the technology and each of these individuals within EA.”
Hmm, who knows? Maybe they will even extend microtransactions to music, too.
