EA Japan Makes Next Generation Titles

Electronic Arts has always been a small player in the Japanese market. The Japanese aren’t into Madden, after all, and foreign developed titles usually don’t sell well in the land where Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy rule. So what is EA doing to correct the problem? This:

That’s an advertisement from the company seeking staff to work in its Japanese development studio. EA has been placing ads like this off and on for the past year in videogame magazines.

The latest issue of Famitsu contains clarification on EA’s intentions across the Pacific. In an interview with the magazine, EA Executive Vice President David Gardner reveals that EA’s Japanese studio, the same studio that’s seeking talent in the above ad, is currently at work on original titles targeting next generation platforms. EA is currently expanding the studio with staff and funding.

While specific games have yet to be announced, Gardner reveals that we can expect to hear something shortly. IGN will point out that both Sony and Microsoft will be holding press conferences later this month where next generation titles are expected to be shown in some capacity.

Gardner also touches upon some of EA’s general next generation game plans. He refers to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as being the centers of the company’s multiplatform plans. Additionally, Gardner reveals that EA plans on releasing twenty five next generation titles by March of 2006. Perhaps a few of these will originate in Japan.
