Eerie Resemblance of Wiimote and Dreamcast Prototype Controllers
Putting photos of SEGA‘s Dreamcast prototype controllers and the Wiimote side by side will definitely show you this unbelievable resemblance between SEGA’s and Nintendo’s controller designs.
Although these are just prototypes of Dreamcast controllers – and they never really got to be in the hands of consumers – they look eerily the same as the Wiimote and the Wii gun adapter. These designs may not have worked well with Sega’s console, given that the controller released with the console looked nothing like the Wiimote now, but they look really interesting. It gives you an idea how much thought developers put into their creations.
And if you think about it, maybe Nintendo found a way to make these controller designs work, and maybe the designers of the Wiimote (assuming they aren’t the same ones who designed the Dreamcast prototype controllers) have also thought much about which would best suit the Wii’s gaming needs most. Hence, the birth of the Wii gun adapter and the Wiimote.
As shown in the photos, the Wiimote gun adapter – like the lightgun adapter for Dreamcast – has triggers at the bottom and some buttons on top. It also has a blank space wherein you could place a Nunchuk-like controller; it also seems to work via wireless technology.
The purpose of these prototypes, the designer/s and what became of these controllers are all unknown. But come on, we all know you’re happy Nintendo “recycled” these ideas for its upcoming console. Imagine yourself running around your living room, chasing around a ball that isn’t even there and getting entertained at the same time. That’s fun, right?
