Codemasters: Overlord for Wii is hardcore, still fun for casual gamers

It’s no secret that the Wii is where mini-games go to breed. Sega is trying to give it some oomph (ie, blood) with House of the Dead: Overkill, but when it comes to hardcore family fun, the game to watch out for is Overlord: Dark Legend. There’s nothing like stepping into the shoes of a 16-year-old tyrant in training.

Brand manager Dan Robinson talks more about the game’s “hardcore”-ness during New York Comic Con. Details after the link.

Yeah, [it’s hardcore] for the Wii. I mean, there are elements of it that are still fun [for casual players] and you can still get involved with it. But I think itÂ’s definitely more of a hardcore game than youÂ’ve got on the Wii at the moment.

The other thing that the WiiÂ’s done is opened a market for the people who perhaps werenÂ’t into gaming before. […] I think this gives us an opportunity to show them that the Wii can actually do games like this, and it actually works and it can make good fun.

Ah, but we all know that Nintendo fans can be just as rabid as any PS3 and Xbox 360 fanboy. True story. Some of them are our readers. But anyway. So what steps did the studio take to please the gamer base?

A lot of Nintendo fans are after a game like this on Nintendo. I think theyÂ’ve seen enough big-headed sports games and mini game collections for the Wii.

Nintendo fanboys tend to be quite loyal to Nintendo, so the people who are playing Â“Metroid PrimeÂ” and Â“ZeldaÂ” and Â“Mario,Â” theyÂ’re kind of after a game like this that does more for them than picking up a Wii and just doing that action [flicks hand side-to-side] all the time. I think those sort of guys are going to be fiending for this game when it comes out.
