Europe’s PEGI now covering online games

PEGI - Image 1Guys in Europe who frequently play online titles on their choice system, be it next-gen console, PC or mobile, may want to hear out this latest news regarding the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system.

A press wire has just announced that aside from rating games being released in Europe, PEGI will now also be used to rate online games. In line with this news, EuropeÂ’s Commissioner for Education and Culture Viviane Reding gave her own statements regarding PEGI’s expanded influence:

The protection of children as users of online technologies is of great importance for the Commission. The Internet has added a whole new dimension to the various forms of media consumption. This includes video games [which] increasingly constitute one of the favourite leisure activities of Europeans of all ages and social categories.

PEGI Online was recently rolled out at the Expert Conference 2007 in Brussels by the Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE). It remains to be seen how this news may affect titles geared for online play, such as Warhawk, The Agency, Age of Conan, or even the tried-and-true World of Warcraft. All the more, as Conan‘s been described to be loaded with some rather mature content
