Existence of PS3 40GB unit confirmed by UPC code

PlayStation 3 - Image 1October 12 is coming with its very own Big Bang statement from Sony. A lot of people are anticipating that they could very well be gearing up to announce that 40GB PS3 for the holidays.

Whether or not they eventually will come out with one, the rumor about the fabled “economic” PS3 unit still hasn’t abated. In fact, this latest bit from Engadget gives the rumor even more legs to stand on. They’ve gotten hold of some documents from Best Buy which list a certain US$ 399 tagged PS3 40GB unit bundled with a Spider-man Blu-ray disc.

While documents of this sort can be easily photoshopped to modify the text fields, checking the Universal Product Code (UPC) on the document can lead to some interesting details: 1) that the UPC is listed under Sony’s name, and 2) it’s listed as a PS3 40GB unit – but not a bundle.

What can we draw from this? Whether the Best Buy document is fake or not, the fact of the matter is that in the UPC database, there is a product listing for UPC # 711719800606 (you can even search for it yourself if you want) and it’s for a “SONY PLAYSTATION 3 40GB” as indicated in the product’s description, manufactured by “SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA”. Even more interesting is that this UPC product page has been modified last on Tuesday, October 2, 2007, 08:45:33. That’s very recent. Like, today-recent.
