eyeVio: Sony to compete with YouTube?
Sony Corp. has announced that it will launch a video-sharing site in Japan. Most reports note that this is the company’s first step in challenging Google Inc.’s dominant YouTube service. The service is set to be called eyeVio and Sony notes that it hopes to introduce it outside of the country. However, it cautions that it wants to gauge the reception at home first before taking the service international.
Perhaps what’s most interesting about the eyeVio service is that it’s set to allow users to download PSP (and iPod) compatible video files. There will also be a mobile version of eyeVio that should allow users to upload videos to the service from their mobile devices.
More interesting is that the logo for eyeVio has an icon for the old “boomerang” PS3 controller in it. Given that Sony’s PlayStation 3 is updated via firmware, an inclusion of it into the service wouldn’t be farfetched.
A Reuters report notes that other companies like News Corp. and NBC Universal are also set to launch free online video services.
Given the massive number of Japanese youths with mobile devices, will this prove to be a good move for Sony? One could certainly hope. What we’re really looking forward to is the integration of this service with PlayStation Home, PlayStation Network, and the PSP. We can dream right?
