Fantasy role-playing games could lead to a new way of life
Recently, we featured the confessions of an MMO junkie who walked away from World of Warcraft after months of addiction that nearly cost him his real-life family and friends. On the flip side we have Heather Chaplin and Aaron Ruby, authors of “Smartbomb: The Quest for Art, Entertainment, and Big Bucks in the Videogame Revolution”.
In this short but very interesting interview with Andrea Seabrook, the authors said MMO will eventually lead to an Internet-based life that goes beyond fantasy.
They believe virtual game worlds could be the beginning of an interface for accessing the Internet in a non-fantasy mode. For instance, people will someday shop via avatars in a 3D on-line setting. Instead of visiting the Gap Store website, shoppers will actually walk into a virtual Gap Store pretty much like the way MMO gamers explore fantasy worlds.
