FCC document hints at possible PS3 Elite?

FCC Document about a PS3 Eilte? - Image 1Say what? A PS3 Elite? *awkward silence* Just right after the official announcement of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite, things couldn’t get any more unsettling. As Kotaku reports, Sony could possibly be working on an upgraded PS3 so much so that it was dubbed to be the “PS3 Elite.” This speculation was born due to a document filed to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) earlier this month.

The document is posted on the right – don’t strain your eyes, click to enlarge – and if you look closely, it outlines a request for making a new PlayStation 3 model (CECHE01) which will include 80GB of storage.

The current models, CECHA01 and CECHB01, respectively have 60GB and 20GB capacities. So what’s this now about a 80GB model? Kotaku speculates:

Could this new hard disk represent a totally new model or simply a storage upgrade? Will the 80GB PS3 at some point become the lower-end model? We’ve heard in the past from inside sources that the Ken Kutaragi was pushing for the introduction of a 250GB model PS3, so future models of the console may feature increased storage.

Well, whether it be an entirely new model or a simple storage (and Bluetooth) update, this does not sit well with Karraker’s recent statement about how “no one is going to get shortchanged at the end of the day, whether they bought one on day one or just yesterday.” But now, if they’re planning to make an upgraded PS3, wouldn’t that be considered “shortchanging” those who’ve already bought a unit?

There’s no confirmation about details regarding this CECHE01 model, and who knows, maybe it was never even approved to begin with? We’ll keep you guys posted as soon as we hear anything official.
