Film execs say low October ticket sales are due to Halo 3

Master Chief - Image 1Many film executives have attributed falling ticket sales for the October 5 weekend to Halo 3. According to Advertising Age, executives are convinced that audiences stayed home to play Bungie Studios and Microsoft‘s latest Halo title.

One of the big movies affected is the Ben Stiller vehicle, The Heartbreak Kid. The movie called for a US$ 20 million to US$ 25 million opening but managed only US$ 14 million in the U.S. and Canada instead.

Total industry ticket sales for the October 5 weekend were also down by 27 percent compared to the same weekend’s haul the year before. Advertising Age notes that this is the industry’s worst performance for an October weekend in the last 8 years.

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey says that “this past weekend will replicate itself next year” when Rockstar North and Take 2 Interactive’s Grand Theft Auto IV (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) is released. Hickey has earlier claimed that Halo 3 sales are indicative of GTA4‘s potential success.
