Final Fantasy XIII May Suffer From PS3 Cost
It has recently become known that Sony’s new PS3 will be priced at $500 and $600 US, depending on which version is chosen. This is over $100 more than the XBox360, and $200 above the supposed price of the Nintendo Wii.
This bodes ill for Square Enix, publisher of the Final Fantasy Series, which has just announced the release of FF8 – which will be available only for the PS3, as will FF Versus XIII. Additionally, Square Enix announced recently that another MMORPG was in the pipeline – again, available only for the PS3.
It is not known how Square Enix will respond to this. FF9 was re-released for XBox360, and Wii versions of FF: Crystal Chronicles and a DQ title) are scheduled for release soon. The fact remains, however, that the FF games that are the core of the series, and form the basis of FF13, may be out of reach for all but gamers with very deep pockets.
On the other hand, the FF series’ popularity may be enough to get devotees to shell out for the PS3. The fact remains, however, that a $600 pricetag for the PS3 will not be a good thing for Square Enix.
