If you ever really expect to see the full breadth and depth of Azeroth (or even in other games), then chances are you’ll have to think about joining a guild eventually. Over at WoW Insider, Mike Schramm opted to post some very important points regarding not just finding a guild, but finding the right guild for you.
- Don’t be a jerk. Now, it goes without saying that not exactly treating people well is the fastest way to end up ostracized in any social community. The same idea applies in an MMORPG. Be good, and good things come back to you.
- Have the level and the gear, or at least know what you’re aiming for. This is actually a very important thing to know. As Schramm writes, “If you’re trying to join a guild that’s raiding MC, it’ll help a lot if you’ve already got tons of fire resist. If you’re wearing greens and trying to join a guild that’s doing Naxx, you’re barking up the wrong tree.” If you intend to join a high-level guild, you either have to show your stuff through experience, good manners, or the proper preparation for the caliber of play of the guild you’re joining. Suffice to say, the proper gear helps in getting accepted.
- No LFGs. Well, this is a point of contention simply because some good guilds actually do end up advertising on LFG for one reason or another. Simply put, the general idea would be to be comfortable with the people you’re with, and it’s harder for you to feel confident in your guildmates if your common bond was apparently worldwide barrens chat, right? Your best bet is to watch those who seem to be the prominent people on your server and basically ask around or do research, rather than praying for the gods to be kind to you.
- Take a trial run. This works in two ways. On the one hand, you can join a guild as a probationary member (initiate or recruit, etc.), and your acceptance into the guild will depend on how you perform during that time. On the other hand, you should also take that time to see if the guild’s values match your own, and if you can really see yourself getting along with the people rather than seeing the organization as a means to an end.
- Participate. This is pretty much why a guild is called a guild. You didn’t expect the bearers of two world-first items to shoulder the burden all by themselves, right? “Staying in a good guild means being a part of the group. When you sign up for raids, show up on time, repaired and ready to go. When guildies ask for help, help them. When they need items farmed from whereever you’re headed, get it for them,” says Schramm. “The more you invest in a guild you like, especially when you’re starting out with them, the more you’ll get in return.”
Like any relationship, your future guild will require your time and also your own sacrifices. In turn, that’s something they’re also ready and willing to give to you. If you’re patient with your searching, you’ll find a home to call your own, and people with whom you can confide your gaming worries and fears in strict confidence. Good luck, gamers.
