Fired Up for the PSP Test Drive

IGN has recently gotten their hands on Fired Up for the PSP at Germany?s Leipzig Games Convention. Here is what they had to say about it:

When we picked up SCE London’s open city car combat game we were immediately dropped into a brownish city devoid of pedestrian life, but brimming with enemy vehicles (tanks and armored jeeps, mainly).

We began our session by just tooling around and getting a feel for the place, but we quickly stumbled into a mission, which can apparently be accessed by speeding into any one of many green bounding boxes. This particular mission charged us with destroying a certain amount of enemy convoys before we could proceed. To succeed we made use of the standard machinegun attack and whatever extra missile power-up rounds we could pick up off the street. Basically we followed a basic map indicator to where the convoy was supposed to be, rounded a corner, stopped, and then blew our entire load.

The convoys were actually pretty easy to kill. We only ever stumbled when trying to race past their burning husks. Because enemy vehicles don’t disintegrate after being blown up, we often found ourselves crashing right into their wrecks that were hidden by smoke and fire.

After repeating this process for a little while we decided to check some of the city out. It’s generally flat, but does feature a few canals and ramped off areas and plenty of carefully placed bonus pickups. Enemy vehicles also patrol throughout the city, but the AI routines don’t yet seem to be set on any of them, so they sort of milled about waiting to be shot (especially if we managed to t-bone one).

Right now Fired Up runs well and clean, but we can’t get a feel for how the missions will remain diverse and exciting. Here’s hoping we’re provided with a more complete build before Fired Up’s September release. If and when that happens, we’ll update accordingly.
