Fox and MGM strike back with big line up of Blu-ray exclusives
It was only just a couple of hours ago when a big blow to the Blu-ray camp was struck – it was in the form of Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks’ announcement of their decision to exclusively go HD-DVD. Now, as if to dispel the fierce attack from earlier, 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) have just announced of a full line-up of movies that they’re going to be releasing exclusively on Blu-ray in the near future.
While both Fox and MGM have been known to be Blu-ray supporters since back in the day, their announcement today is more of a “we’re here to stay, and we won’t back down on Blu-ray” sort of reaffirmation. They are still committed to Blu-ray despite other movie studios jumping over to HD-DVD.
By “committed”, they mean to release a bulk load of “must-have” titles, some of which include Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Live Free or Die Hard, and the TV show Prison Break. Mike Dunn of Fox reasons that:
Given that Blu-ray has consistently outsold HD-DVD all year, […] we believe that the time is right for us to accelerate our activities and help convert the nearly 60 million high definition households worldwide into Blu-ray households. // By the end of [2007] there will be expansive availability of technically vibrant releases featuring never-before-seen, advanced BD-J interactivity as well as a broad offering of playback devices at attractive prices that will prove to any doubting consumers once and for all that Blu-ray is the only way.
Pretty strong words. And to prove their commitment, they’ve already even fleshed out a couple of titles that they’re going to bring to the Blu-ray format over the next few months:
- Master & Commander
- The Day After Tomorrow
- From Hell
- The Fly (1986)
- Edward Scissorhands
- 28 Days Later
- Robocop
- Amityville Horror (1979)
- Battle of Britain
- A Bridge Too far
- I, Robot
- Die Hard
- Die Hard 2: Die Harder
- Die Hard with a Vengeance
- Red Dawn
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith
- Independence day
- Cast Away
- Ronin
