Further PSP 2 Rumblings
While the rumours of details regarding the Sony PSP 2 have been circulating for a little while, there has been further speculation that the current optical disc-based format (UMD) may be dropped entirely with the PSP 2 – according to a ‘reliable source close to Sony’.
Instead of using the UMD format, it is reported that the new PSP will ‘have built in hard drive support from the beginning, and will not be using the UMD media format, either for games or for other content’ also, backwards compatibility with UMD’s is not a sure thing either, meaning that users who upgrade to the PSP 2, will render their current UMD games and movies useless.
While abandoning the UMD format may not be a complete shock to the system, given the so-so development by movie studios and falling sales figures, this obviously has not been confirmed by Sony (a standard ‘no comment’ response) but a confirmation from them regarding the new system will likely happen in the imminent future.
