FYI: Bungie doesn’t actually hate Halo 2
Contrary to current thoughts regarding Bungie‘s seeming dissatisfaction with Halo 2, they’re not saying they actually hated their own game. While hindsight may reveal to members of the dev team that Halo 2 was lacking in certain respects, they still love their game and are using their hindsight to fuel the fires that will enable Halo 3 to become a hot commodity in the future.
Frank O’Connor put it best on Bungie’s website, clearing up the issue of Bungie hating itself:
This week, weirdly, a bunch of websites ran excerpts from a month-old interview with Edge Magazine where some Bungie staff expressed dissatisfaction with various game features in H2. Of course we did. WeÂ’re always trying to improve it. Anyhoo, long story short, for some reason, we got quoted out of context as basically hating everything about the dear old game, when in fact we love it, and want to build on it.
While we didn’t get this illuminating interview with Bungie, 1Up certainly did. O’Connor also links to a new article on 1Up that explains their their current train of thought. Best of all, it also serves as a promise of sorts. O’Connor himself mentions how their own self-criticism works for them rather than against them, and how their “internal criticism is being shoveled into the furnace of development like fuel.”
Best of luck to them, and you guys better brush up on this new bit of info at the read link. We may just be in for the ride of our lives when the game comes out.
