GarageGames gives word on pricing, defines contest prize

feel for the chicken...GarageGames has recently announced pricing for their TorqueX line of products. So what’s the cost? Well, as far as the announcement says, it’s free.

They’ve decided to make a feature-complete binary version of the Torque X game engine available for free download. They also say that they fully intend to get the Torque X engine available for download on December 11, the same date that Microsoft is officially releasing XNA Game Studio Express by Microsoft”>XNA Game Studio Express. Good!

They note though that coding directly against the engine binary should be relatively painless for those versed in C#, scripting, and/or our engine functionality. However, those who don’t speak C# will want a toolset to make sense of the engine and maximize productivity. So in comes another product of theirs.

GarageGames are “pimping” their 2D toolset, Torque Game Builder. The Torque X team has been working closely with the Torque Game Builder team to make the TGB toolset work when talking to either our 2D C++ engine, or the Torque X C# engine.

This means that on December 11, a new version of Torque Game Builder will be available that includes the Level Builder, enabling developers to set up sprites, animated sprites, scrollers, tiles; all of these features will work seamlessly with Torque X. They add that if you already own TGB, all you have to do is download the free binary of Torque X. They’re also be offering a “Pro” version of Torque X with Source Included for those who want to dive into the C# code and modify the functionality of the engine. The Pro version costs $150.

Bottom-line:

  • Torque X engine binary – FREE
  • Torque X Pro – $150 (Source Included)
  • Torque Game Builder – $100 (available now for use with our 2D C++ engine)
