GC 2007: Wii Fit details on Ski Jump and Ball Rolling

With Wii Fit being Nintendo’s big surprise at its E3 Media Conference, it’s not hard to imagine all the curiosity revolving around the game that promises to get gamers lean and fit through the use of a specially-developed peripheral you stand on, called the Balance Board. Of course, despite all the media ruckus involving this title, there’s really not much known about what sort of activities you’ll be doing in Wii Fit – that is, until GC Leipzig happened.

In Nintendo’s booth preview of the game at GC, two Wii Fit activities were revealed – and both of them certainly look out to challenge not only your sense of balance, but your timing as well. And like in Wii Play and Wii Sports, your customized Miis will be able to make their appearances during gameplay.

The first activity revealed in the booth preview is Ski Jump, where your Mii is sent hurtling down an Olympic-sized ski ramp. Crouching down with your feet firmly planted on the Wii Balance Board gets your super-deformed avatar sliding down the incline – and standing up at the right moment would launch him or her into the air. It’s then that your sense of balance comes into play, as you have to keep things level for your Mii to land safely and not wipe out painfully in the snow. Ouch.

Next up is Ball Rolling. Using your sense of balance once more, you manipulate a tilting playing field where the goal is to navigate a marble through a maze, and sink it into the goal. A successful sink drops you down into a new level, and as you progress through more holes, obstacles and marbles are added. Simple, but fun.

While the activities revealed may seem a bit basic, it should be noted that there’s still a lot of ’em yet to be revealed in Wii Fit – and it’s safe to say that they far outnumber the enjoyable but somewhat lacking five in Wii Sports. Let’s just hope they turn out to be just as fun.
