GDC 09: Fat Princess is still gaining weight
Smooth graphics, multiplayer for 32 people, bloody massacres, and best of all, royalty that wouldn’t say no to more cake. What’s not to love about Fat Princess? More news about the overeating monarch comes in as the real monarchs behind the game put up a booth at the 2009 GDC. More cake for you after the link.

Loving the concept – a nice, cartoony RTS-like capture-the-flag multiplayer with five character classes to rescue or overfeed your damsel in dietary distress. We’ve already seen the characters in action at the CES in January, but for recap’s sake, here they are again:
- Warrior: melee fighter – hits hard, takes a lot of punishment but has limited range
- Archer: ranged attack – doesn’t hit as hard as the warrior, but can attack from afar
- Mage: magic attack – unloads spells, deals great damage but can’t take much beating
- Priest: support – your army’s healer, but it’s just as frail and vulnerable as the mage
- Villagers: workforce – in Warcraft terms, this is your peon/wisp/acolyte/peasant
Each class may be upgraded up to Level 3, or they may switch to a new one if they get new headgear. The new GDC info reveals that devs gave extra attention to the upgrades, plus some info on the controls: Square allows you to charge, let go and unleash a deadly attack; L1 locks on to units, showing their current status; and R1 lets you span through the map quicker.
Even the menu item names have been cartoon-ized, which doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a cool thing to do anyway:
- Bragging Rights: the leaderboards
- Twiddly Knobs: options menu
- Why I’m Awesome: your player stats, which includes your kill count, wins, etc.
- Get Fabulous: you get to customize your units’ skin tone, clothing, hair, even eye color
It might be too early at this point in time to be saying so, but I really think Epic Games delivered on an epic game of fat proportions. I can’t wait for this one!
