GDC 2007: Mark Rein, Unreal Engine 3, and mod support
During the GDC, Mark Rein gave a talk about the ins and outs of the Unreal Engine 3 running on both the PS3 and 360, and what it’s like working on the engine in both systems. It was a tad bit in-depth and we might’ve missed out on a couple of things. Here, as pointed out by Robert Summa of Destructoid, are some details revealed during the tech demo that we’ve yet to flesh out:
- Epic Games is working on a feature that’ll allow in-game (PC) mods to be easily integrated on the 360 and PS3. They’ll be releasing all the tools you’d need to implement Unreal mods in real time.
- There’ll be a book coming out to help you game modders, both in retail and online. Rein says they’ll also release a couple of video tutorials on the subject as well.
- For Gears of War, they pushed every capacity of the 360 to get the game on the platform. If the console didn’t have the 512MB of RAM, the title wouldn’t have ever been possible.
- The tech demo also showed Artificial Studios‘ UE3-based game in the works for the 360: Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia. In Robert Summa’s words: “The game was very cartoony and fun — kind of like a kid’s show Diablo.”
Looks like Epic’s got their hands firmly around the bull’s horns. Their Unreal Engine 3 is here to stay, and they’re going to make sure that it’s going to be beneficial for everyone concerned.
