GDC 2007: Spore dev rants that “The Wii is a piece of Sh*t”
Before all you Ninty fans stab us to death with pitchforks, or plan to hack our servers and infest it with animated gifs of flying male organs, please, don’t kill us, we’re just the messenger.
IGN reports that during a session at GDC 2007 titled “Burning Mad – Game Publishers Rant” Chris Hecker, a speaker currently working on for Maxis, and part of the team working on Spore, had this acidic rant to say: “The Wii is a piece of shit! …Fear of a Wii Planet.”
He goes on to say that the Wii is nothing more than “two GameCubes stuck together with duct tape.” Hecker notes that he he wasn’t simply referring to the Wii’s graphical capacity, but he also emphasized that he wants to spend a console’s CPU making AI in games more intelligent, and he finds that the Wii just doesn’t have to power to do that.
Hecker adds by saying that Nintendo doesn’t take games seriously as an art form. To illustrate his point, he searched for references on games as art on all three console makers’ official websites and he notes that while he found multiple references on PS3’s site and Xbox 360’s site, he says that Wii had none at all. He argues that perhaps Nintendo sees games as just “fun.”
Hecker ends his rant by demanding that Nintendo recognize and push games as serious art (Don’t they already with some of their games? Also, isn’t game input, as much a part of the “art form” as graphical output is?) and that they “make a console that doesn’t suck ass.”
