After seeing the last videos on Gears of War 2‘s multiplayer mode, you have to give it to Epic Games for what’s looking like a job well done. Craving for more details? We have some and it’s on the new Horde mode, some new locales, cool new toys, and more. Click on the jump and be enlightened.
New details on Gears of War 2‘s multiplayer mode has been added to the table courtesy of Gamespot. A new mode, a couple of new maps, and a pair of new weapons have been added to the mix, and those who’ve tested them are obviously pleased with what they experienced.
The new mode is called Horde and it can be best described as a team survival type of game. You and four friends will band together and try to stay alive for as long as you can. Of course, that’s no easy task because wave after wave of locust variants will come to try and dispose of your squad.
Microsoft says it’s planning to have around 50 or so waves of Horde attacks with increasing difficulties. Defending against the first mobs will be simple enough and you’ll get a few seconds of rest to reload, pick up gear, and collect ammo. The next batch will come soon, and you better be locked, loaded, and in position when they do.
In higher levels, teamwork will be paramount as it’s inevitable that some team members will be overwhelmed and get killed. reviving each other systematically will be very instrumental to victory.
One of the new maps will give you an idea of how emergence day happened in the Gears of War universe. You’ll be taken to what looks like a peaceful city until chaos erupts with a giant Locust hole appears and starts spewing horrors. Your job is to try and make sure that the bugs eat lead the moment they see the light of day.
As for the new weapons, we’ve got some heavy stuff from the armory. The mulcher and the mortar have been introduced and they look like they’ll be pretty useful.
The mulcher is basically a heavy machine gun that’s hard to aim and will slow you down. In close quarters, however, it will be very deadly as it’ll spam bullets like it’s nobody’s business and take out groups. What’s more, its secondary fire option is that you can lay it down with a stand and convert it to a mini-turret. Just be careful about using it too often as the mulcher can heat up and lock down pretty fast.
The mortar, like the mulcher, is heavy and will slow you down. It’s also not very accurate, but its real beauty lies in the secondary fire function. You can also put it down on a stand so you can lob shells at enemies from a distance with accuracy using a range finder. This is pretty cool when a group of foes is at a good length away from you.
That’s about all we have for now on Gears of War 2. We’ll keep you updated for more news.
