Apple Maps for the Web
Apple Maps has finally been made available on the Web for those who still want to print directions or search for business info on a Windows computer. It took 12 years. Apple Maps was first available on the web in 2018 with MapKitJS, which allowed websites to embed Apple Maps rather than Google Maps. Apple Maps’ entire database is now available on the web, but in beta. The web version is a simple copy of the mapping interface on your iPhone or iPad. You won’t be using it for turn by turn navigation. Anyone who has used Apple Maps will be familiar with the interface. A sidebar offers options for guides, directions, and search. You can select a business to see its hours, phone number, website, menus and Yelp reviews. You’ll see the overview of the directions and step-bystep instructions if you choose to get directions. The directions will be automatically formatted to print when you select the print option. Apple plans to add Look Around – its version of Google Street View – in a future software update. Developers can link to Maps for more specific integrations. Google has dominated online maps for so long that you’re likely to see Google’s map on any website. Apple has been able penetrate this market a little, with some websites using MapKit JS – most notably DuckDuckGo’s in 2019. Apple has in the past claimed that Apple Maps was the most popular iPhone mapping app, which is logical due to its default power. Apple needs to have its maps available everywhere to capture even more market share. Apple Maps is now available on the internet. It’s not a major blow to Google but it does give those who prefer Apple Maps another option if they are stuck on a Windows PC at work and need local business information. Apple Maps can only be accessed on the web in English. Apple Maps is currently available in Safari, Chrome and Edge browsers. Additional browsers and languages are expected to be added over time.
