Greenberg: PS3 is hemorrhaging at sales, Lost and Damned could’ve beat Killzone 2

That didn’t take too long. As soon as the NPD Charts for February was released, Microsoft exec Aaron Greenberg spews out more fighting words, claiming that the PS3 “is hemorrhaging at retail.”

Well, there are still two places above…

For the month of February, the Xbox 360 landed at third place, selling 391,000 units, 29.29% more than the expected 302,500 (after the dynamic duo of the WiiDS). “That exceeds even the high end of what analysts projected we would do for the month. We’ve had multiple months now of sustained year over year grow, which is fantastic.” The PS3 sold 276,000 units, or 23.16% more of the expected 224,100 units.

And Greenberg goes on:

You can’t underestimate that we’re half the price of the PS3 at a time when consumers were looking for great value. The PS3 was down in February two percent even with the launch of Killzone 2 – that’s months of year-over-year declines. Xbox continues to head north while the PS3 is heading south. We’re gaining share.

But what we hear from our partners is that it’s not just PS3, it’s also PS2 down 62 percent year over year. With that business declining, and with the PS3 business declining, it’s been described as hemorrhaging at retail right now, and it just keeps getting worse.

What we’re finding in our research is that a large portion of the volume we’re driving with Xbox 360 purchasers is actually PS2 owners choosing Xbox for the next generation. We’re switching people from the PlayStation brand over to the Xbox brand.

He also raved about the success of their titles and how over 130 have scored a grade over 80 on Metacritic, saying that “no other platform even has 100 at that level.” Hmm.. could this 130 score be the one EEDAR was referring to in its study?

Speaking of games to be proud about, Greenberg was particularly hyped up over the success of Rockstar North‘s exclusive Xbox 360 expansion for Grand Theft Auto IV, The Lost & Damned. While he did not spew out specific numbers to reflect just how successful the addon game content was, he did confidently say that “If that content was sold at retail, it would be one of the best sellers across all  platforms. It would have outsold Killzone 2.”
