Guardian of Light has co-op, is very arcade-y

Turns out Crystal Dynamics weren’t joking when they said Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was “very different to what people might be expecting.” Instead of the third-person shooter we’ve come to know and love, Guardian of Light is opting for a more old-school arcade-y aesthetic.

Guardian of Light features a fixed top-down isometric camera angle that feels like it was ripped straight from the 80s. The gameplay is a surprise, but some familiar elements are still here, including tombs and booby-trap puzzles. The ancient artifact here is something called the Mirror of Smoke, and the bad guy is an evil spirit named Xoxolt.

Lara gets a new companion to help her with her grave-robbing and Xoxolt-fighting activities: the Mayan spearwielder Totec. Both are playable and a lot of the exploration becomes possible only by having the two cooperate. Guardian of Light‘s co-op system works both online and locally. There’s also a drop-in system so a second player can join in at any time. Sounds like all that’s missing is a coin slot on your consoles.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will hit PCs, PS3s and Xbox 360s this year as a downloadable title.
