Guild Wars Banned “Bots”

Guild WarsA recent Guild Wars update revealed that they have cracked down on bot-users big time. They’ve cancelled the accounts and banned over a thousand of these users. According to the Guild Wars website, “in our continuing efforts to preserve a solid game economy and to support the legitimate Guild Wars player, we have been actively pursuing those who use “bots” in Guild Wars. In the last week, we have closed more than one thousand accounts of those using third-party programs, and we will continue to take similar action in the future.”

In case “MMORPG bots” seems like a foreign language to you, this is what they’re all about. PC Game bots are most prominent in the first person shooter (FPS) type games, they’re robotic computer-controlled entities that can simulate an online or LAN multiplayer human deathmatch opponent, team deathmatch opponent, or a helpful and cooperative human player. In MMORPGs, the most usual bots are AFK gaming, OpenKore, VisualKore, and modKore. Most of these bots (especially the last three) are heavily used in the MMORPG, Ragnarok Online.

AFK (Away from Keyboard) Gaming is typically used by MMO gamers to continuously do a repetitive task for them, over and over. With this at hand, it gives the player a clear advantage over those who play it “fairly”. That is why it is no surprise that this way of playing is typically frowned on by the gaming community, but still it is being used by lots of gamers since it has many advantages in time/reward payoffs.

And if you’re thinking of devious plans to use this one, let me just tell you that this is against the user agreement of all MMORPGs, so if you are caught red-handed with this one, you’ll definitely be kicked to the curb. So if you’re guilty of this sin, shape up or ship out. ArenaNet and NCsoft mean business this time.
