Guild Wars: The “caller”

GW

To survive in this dog-eat-dog world, you gotta learn how to communicate eloquently and you have to know how and when to push for what you think is right for you. Yeah, every normal human being could utter a word or two, but there are a select few who could convey their thoughts in a very convincing manner that people always look forward to what their gonna say and eventually, they follow that person’s statements.

Since MMOs are pretty much like real life, a good leader is measured not only by how great he is in choosing members and deciding play times. His or her in-battle leadership is also a factor. PvPers usually refer to it as “calling”. This is the focus of Guild Wars recent State of the Game article – how to effectively communicate over voice communication.

Of course, the caller should be able to speak clearly so as everyone can understand him. That person must be decisive and confident because if he/she stutters while dishing out game plans, then the whole team would buckle under pressure. For someone to earn that confidence, he should be knowledgeable about the game, you wouldn’t want a great pretender to lead your team as luck could not take you that far. And for you to be knowledgeable about the game and your guild members, you should have been in the guild for quite some time now.

Of course, nobody’s perfect and oftentimes, there are callers who will falter under pressure which will cause them to mumble and stutter while speaking. Totally acceptable mistakes but also avoidable ones. How to avoid them? Of course, you have to minimize noise, so anything irrelevant to the game plan should not be mentioned. There should also be an open communication wherein the Guild will be scrutinizing the problem and not the players involved. Optimism is always a good thing, we mean come on, who would want to team up with a hostile guild.
